Providence | New Performance Festival

Monday, February 20th, 2012

Providence | Friday 24 – Saturday 25 February | 7.45pm

Providence by Louise Tu’u returns for two nights only on Friday 24th and Saturday 25th February, as part of the New Performance Festival, being held at the Aotea Centre, The Edge in Auckland.  Artists from Canada, Germany and Australia as well as local folk will be simultaneously performing and exciting audiences and themselves about what performance can become.

Quietly deafening, raw and ambiguous with multiple characters deftly played by two actors on a minimal set. The structure of the performance emulates the dysfunction of the characters’ lives, all the while playfully undermining traditional script-writing conventions. This is not just the recreation of stories, Providence is an investigation of the states of homelessness.

Louise Tu’u’s skillfully crafted script throws away narrative and concentrates on the nonsensical, self-righteous prejudices that people have of the homeless. Spanning nearly three years, Tu’u went undercover, speaking with the homeless, having meals at drop-in centres and spending time in a shelter in central Auckland to get a sense of what it is to be without a home.

This Auckland indie favourite was hailed as one of the top theatre pieces of the year by New Zealand Herald when premiered in 2010.

“Best of 2010… Providence masterfully led its audience into “experiencing a replica aspect of homelessness.” NZ Herald

Artist Residency | Australian National University

Monday, February 13th, 2012

The Pacific Studies Program in the College of Asia and the Pacific and the Pasifika Australia outreach program are launching an exciting new initiative in 2012.   They are inviting performing and visual artists (including film-makers) of Pacific or South Sea Islander ancestry to submit applications for a 4 week residency at the Australian National University.

Applicants should provide a full cv, contact details of three referees, and a two page proposal outlining their arts project and the resources they would need to pursue it.  Applicants should also address how they might engage ANU scholars, undergraduate students, school students in the Australian Capital Territory and its region, local communities, and institutions such as the National Gallery of Australia, the National Museum of Australia, the National Portrait Gallery and the National Film and Sound Archive.

Successful applicants will be supported with an honorarium, accommodation costs and travel expenses. The timing of visits will be worked out by mutual agreement but they seek to make an inaugural appointment early in 2012.  Applications close February 24, 2012 and should be submitted electronically to nicholas.mortimer@anu.edu.au. Further details available from Dr Katerina Teaiwa: katerina.teaiwa@anu.edu.au, T: +61 26125 0857
