GOODBYE MY FELENI

Monday, May 28th, 2012

Goodbye My Feleni

A MAORI BATTALION PLAY WITH NO MAORI
Half an hour with four Pasifika soldiers in the 28th (Maori) Battalion.

The theatre debut of scriptwriter D F Mamea, Goodbye My Feleni.

Thursday 14 June to Saturday 16 June 2012, at the Herald Theatre in Auckland.

Goodbye My Feleni is set in 1942 and takes place at Trentham Army Camp in Wellington. In D Company (also known as Ngati Walkabout) of the 28th (Maori) Battalion, the youthful confidence of three young Pasifika soldiers is shaken by the last minute replacement of their lieutenant.  Their new leader may well be a battle-hardened veteran but he is also an unwelcome reminder of the soldiers’ mortality.

Playwright David Mamea (Safune/Safotu, Samoa) had assumed Pacific Islanders had fought in the Second World War. “I was listening to the Maori Battalion CD a few years back, and when I heard
someone talking in Samoan, introducing two Samoan songs… something seized my heart: that seventy years earlier, and half way around the world, four young Pasifika men sang of their homelands and their fears. I had to write something around that.”

Goodbye My Feleni is written by D F Mamea, produced by Jenni Heka, and directed by Chris Molloy. Playing the Pasifika soldiers are Shadon Meredith, Andy Sani, Leki Jackson Bourke, and
Samson Chan-Boon.

In Spite of Ourselves: Approaching Documentary

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2012

Questions around documentary practice have long centered on a battle between representation and meaning over sensation. This exhibition seeks to rethink the parameters of documentary by examining practices that critique ideas concerning witness, truth and account, whilst also challenging the idea that documentary itself is inherently biased and politically dodgy.

Taking Ans Westra’s iconic and controversial images from Washday at the Pa (1964) as an initial point to think about representation, the exhibition In Spite of Ourselves: Approaching Documentary offers new ways to read, understand and interpret documentary practices through a historical and contemporary focus.

Mark Adams, Louisa Afoa, Sophia Al-Maria, David Cook, Rebecca Ann Hobbs, John Lake, Darcy Lange, Jae Hoon Lee, Janet Lilo, Sarah Murphy, Walid Raad, Haruhiko Sameshima, Ann Shelton, Shigeru Takato, Luke Willis Thompson, Vandy Rattana, Ans Westra.

Curated by Fiona Amundsen, Dieneke Jansen and Vera Mey

Opening Thursday 24 May, 5:30 pm

25 May – 29 June, 2012, ST PAUL St Galleries One & Two, 40 St Paul St, AUT
