The Karangahape Road Business Association (KBA) presents an opportunity to respond to the three sculptural light poles on the Karangahape Road overbridge. KBA are looking for an artist (individual or collective) who can deliver a high quality design that will be applied to the surface of the three poles. Submissions must be received by 15 July 2016.
Filipe Tohi says his designs which are currently on the pylons symbolise the Southern Cross constellation which early Pacific people used to navigate the ocean. The lifespan of the artwork is two to four years at which point it will be renewed following another expression of interest process. The successful artwork will be chosen by a selection panel comprising representatives of the K’ Rd creative community, as well as Auckland Council and the KBA.
These light poles are seen as the gateway to the vibrant K’ Rd area and should reflect the essence of the community, its history and its unique place in Auckland City. The current configuration of the poles features back-lit film secured in place by clear acrylic panels. Each pole is comprised of 20 printed 1200 x 500 acrylic panels backlit during night hours. Two are situated at the Western end and one at the Eastern end of the K’ Rd overbridge.
Submissions may be for back-lit film fabrication, but other means of fabrication will be considered. For example; stencil, fabric, laser cut acrylic or steel, routered wood veneer etc. Artwork should successfully operate in both day and night scenarios.
The Project would commence upon appointment of artist July 29 and finish with the installation of the artwork on site in conjunction with the December 2016 First Thursdays event on K’ Rd. The project is funded and supported by Auckland Council.
