Tautai is delighted to welcome the third Tautai Artist in Residence, Selwyn Palmer Teho to Auckland. Selwyn arrived in Auckland on 24 February and will be here for five weeks, departing on 30 March.
Selwyn lives in White River, a suburb of Honiara the capital of the Solomon Islands but his family connections are with Rennell and Bellona. Selwyn is 33 years old and is a largely self taught artist who works in a number of media – he paints, sculpts and is also a tattoo artist. He has represented his country in a number of festivals in the Pacific, has taken part in exhibitions in Indonesia, Brisbane and Auckland as well as in Solomon Islands.
He works as a painter and decorator, teaches art classes and is also currently making a book for and in collaboration with one of the local kindergartens. He is also involved in preparations for the Pacific Arts Festival which the Solomon’s are hosting in 2012.
The Tautai residency offers ‘a gift of time’ to the artist. There is no expectation that the artist make work while they are in Auckland. Tautai anticipates that the artist will meet and spend time with Auckland based artists, visit galleries and libraries and continue their own research. Selwyn will be taking part in the 3rd annual OFFSTAGE event which is happening at Galatos in Newton on Friday 18 March – you need to be there to see what he does!
If you would like to contact Selwyn please email him at selwynpalmer@gmail.com or call Tautai 09.376 1665
