Mini Pacific Arts Village
Tautai Contemporary Pacific Arts Trust is creating a mini Pacific Arts Village during the Rugby World Cup – Real NZ Festival and has invited pacific artists to create works specifically with the rugby tourist in mind. This will provide a great opportunity for artists to be able to showcase and sell their work in a relaxed and informal environment with plenty of Pacific fun and flair.
Join a buzz of creative activity as artists are at the village making and talking about their work. Items from t-shirts to weaving, to paintings and tapa will be available. Alongside visual arts, this free outdoor event will feature a host of performances by poets, actors, musicians and much, much more! You’ll be encouraged to watch, interact and ask questions while taking in the various activities and impressive range of crafts and artworks available for purchase.
Auckland has the largest Polynesian population of any city in the world. Take advantage of this by going along to the beautiful surrounds of Auckland’s centrally located Western Park and immersing yourself in some of their unique culture.
Tautai believes that the Rugby World Cup is a perfect opportunity for its artists to capture the interest and curiosity of the Rugby visitors. Tautai has arranged to convert a 20 x foot container into a portable gallery which will be installed over ten days in two central locations – Western Park, Ponsonby Road and Beresford Square, Pitt St – KRd Precinct. All proceeds from the sales will go back to the artists.
Renowned Invercargill-based Samoan sculptor Johnny Penisula who specialises in large stone sculptural works as well as smaller stone and bone adornment pieces, will be on site as part of the artist residency at the Tautai Pacific Art Village. Penisula will be at the Pacific Arts Village from 18-25 Oct 2011. The public will be given the opportunity to view Penisula in action.
Tautai Pacific Arts Village also will provide an opportunity for performance as part of the open mic “artist hot-spot” with poets, music, pacific monologues and dance.
Christina Jeffery – Tautai Manager says “this is a great chance for the artists to spend some time together and for the many visitors to the country to see and perhaps purchase some small works to take home as a memento of their visit to the Pacific’.
Tautai Contemporary Pacific Arts Trust is committed to supporting and providing opportunities for the development of contemporary pacific art and artists through an extensive program of events and activities offered throughout Aotearoa|New Zealand.
This event is supported by the NZ Lottery Grants Board and the Real NZ Festival with special thanks to the K'rd Business Association.
