True True, a phrase taken from David Mitchell‘s book and later Lilly and Lana Wachowski‘s 2012 science fiction film Cloud Atlas.  A True True is a noun from a futuristic pidgin English meaning the real truth and acts as an anchor for the selection of the works in the exhibition.  Some of the artists work within systems that utilise technology to create their works, others have technology and its place in our lives as an underpinning narrative to make work from. The works in the exhibition are selected by the curator and display a range of traditional media, digital painting, photography and installation.

The Calder & Lawson Gallery is home to the Academy’s diverse visual arts programme.
The exhibitions feature a range of contemporary art from some of New Zealand’s most exciting artists. Information about the current and upcoming exhibitions can be viewed here or for more information contact the University of Waikato Art Collection Curator.

In addition to the exhibitions and events in the Calder & Lawson Gallery a selection of works of contemporary New Zealand art from the James Wallace Charitable Arts Trust are displayed in other spaces throughout the Academy.
