Johnny Penisula

Johnny Penisula (1941-2023) was a significant Sāmoan artist, master stone carver and mentor whose contribution to contemporary Pacific art in Aotearoa spanned more than five decades. Born in Sāmoa, he moved to New Zealand in 1962 and began exhibiting in the early 1970s. Largely self-taught, Penisula developed a distinctive sculptural practice grounded in Sāmoan heritage, cultural knowledge and a deep understanding of stone. 

Closely connected to Tautai, he contributed to its sculpture programme and participated in several Tautai Sculpture Symposiums, generously sharing his knowledge and skills with emerging artists. His practice brought together Sāmoan cultural traditions and contemporary sculptural approaches, helping to challenge perceptions of Pacific art and affirm its place within Aotearoa’s wider art landscape. 

Penisula’s legacy within Tautai is rooted in his generosity as an artist and mentor. Through his practice, teaching and participation in Tautai’s sculpture activities, he helped connect generations of Pacific artists and strengthen the community and knowledge-sharing networks that continue to support Pacific contemporary art.
